What's the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile for floors?
Porcelain is fired denser and absorbs less water, so it holds up better in bathrooms, entries, and high-traffic floors. Ceramic is lighter and often cheaper, and it works well on walls and lower-traffic areas. For a bathroom floor we usually steer homeowners toward porcelain.
What affects ceramic and porcelain tile installation cost?
The number that moves most is the prep. Square footage, tile size and material, the amount of demo, subfloor repair, waterproofing, and pattern complexity such as diagonal, herringbone, or large-format all change the quote. Natural stone runs higher than ceramic or porcelain because it needs sealing and careful handling. We do not quote a rate blind. We scope the job in person and give you a flat number before any work starts.
Should tile go on the floor, the wall, or both?
Floor tile has to handle foot traffic and moisture, so it needs a rated, denser material and full waterproofing underneath. Wall tile carries no traffic load, so lighter ceramic and larger decorative pieces work well there. Showers get both, and the wall-to-floor transition and the pan are where waterproofing has to be flawless. That transition is the part we prep most carefully.
